Sunday School Done Right: Make Disciples

Giving the Great Commission to the Church, Jesus commanded, “Go ye [all of you] therefore, and teach [make disciples of] all nations . . . teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20 KJV).

Since the founding of the first Sunday school by Robert Raikes in England in 1780, Sunday school “done right” has been effective for “making disciples” of believers in Jesus Christ. Doing Sunday school right has always been dependent on teachers in the Sunday school, called of God and empowered by the Holy Spirit for their ministry of teaching.

Leading people to saving faith in Jesus Christ (evangelism) is the first step toward becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. Then, after that, learning to be a disciple of Jesus Christ is a lifelong endeavor. For children, young people, and adults, Sunday school done right has been unsurpassed by any other invention of the church for making disciples of believers in Christ.

Those churches that provide Sunday school for adults and young people, as well as for children, understand that learning to be a disciple of Christ is an educational process from which we never graduate. We never stop learning to live the way Christ would have us live, and we never stop learning to minister, the ways in which Christ would have us to minister.
